Prior to a recent discussion, I hadn't considered Facebook as self-promotion. I had seen it as a form of promotion for businesses, and co-operatives, entities. Individual promotion for celebrities didn't count as they market themselves and are in a way entities. It seems a bit of an insidious progression of thought, from connection and sharing to self-promotion or aggrandizement. I had to really think, do I do that? Do I only post pictures that I think are "cute"? Yes, but then most of the pictures I post are of my children, and they are the cutest things on the planet (to me). I don't consider any of the pictures of me, which are mainly posted by others, to be cute in any way. I may be indulging in self delusion, but I don't think I have used Facebook as a form of self marketing of my image, life, lifestyle, or for any other reason. I have some friends that post all the time, while I rarely post anything. This is analogous to our face to face interactions as well. I tend to listen, while my friends who are constant posters rarely seem to take a break/breath. In other words they talk like they post, constantly, about everything and anything.
I think that the reason that Facebook is so popular is that it can be used for both conscious and unconscious promotion of anything, or nothing at all.
