In further discussion of the Couldry text, the Turkle quote particularly hits home as I sometimes wonder where technology is leading us. I read just today about physical therapists that are treating toddlers because their motor skills are not developing as they should because they spend an inordinate amount of time with technology instead of out playing as in the past. It is a battle to get my own outside. I am not sure that I want to live among media where it is so intertwined with my life that it is difficult to see where one ends and the other begins. Just carrying on a conversation with friends involves the inclusion of smart phones or tablets.
Linguistic hospitality or more simply the virtue of care is an idea that everyone should be interested in. It goes back to think before you speak, and, there are some things you just can’t take back, at the most basic common courtesy. This is not to say that every word must be edited, though that is not a bad idea, nor that opinions and views are not voiced. Views, opinions, and ideas should of course be voiced, discussed, shared. What must be considered is, as the text says, the impact and effects do not cause harm.
As part of the three virtues of media practice it is hard to say if care or accuracy or sincerity is most important. For my part I would vote for care and sincerity. \
